English football too focused on professional game according to UEFA official

UEFA official William Gaillard has said that English football is too heavily focused on the professional game.

Gaillard, adviser to president Michel Platini, accepted that the professional game had generated large revenues but at the expense of grassroots football.

"English professional football has been enormously successful in producing revenues and building up the game and we have to be grateful to the Premier League and Rugby League for that," told MPs at a Culture, Media and Sport Committee inquiry into football governance.

"At the same time this has not resulted in a better situation for English football in general and performances of the national team have not been outstanding."
