Ex West Ham player in Ryman League club takeover bid

Ryman League Division One South side Sittingbourne Rugby Club has received a takeover offer from former professional footballer Michael Hughes.

Chairman Andy Spice hopes to conclude a deal very soon after growing business commitments means he can no longer commit the time required into the club.

A spokesman for Hughes said: "There is an offer on the table to help take the club forward.

"We want to supplement what has already been achieved by Andy Spice and the current club directors and members who have given a considerable amount of time and money to the football club.

"With their continued input we are offering to come into the club and help out financially but more importantly to commit time, something due to his business commitments, Andy can no longer do."

The club, which has been bankrolled by Spice, has suffered from dwindling crowds and rising costs and stopped paying its manager and players in January as it looked to remove its debts.

Chairman Spice added: "We are negotiating with Michael Hughes at the moment and we are hoping something comes out of it.

"I feel confident it will go ahead and we will be pleased if it does."
