Gloucester Rugby in Investment Talks as CEO Alex Brown Reassures Supporters Over Club’s Financial Position

Gloucester Rugby are engaged in discussions over potential new investment, with chief executive Alex Brown insisting the Premiership club remains in a strong position despite reporting increased financial losses.

The Cherry and Whites reported losses of £2.91 million in their latest financial accounts, covering the year to June 2025, compared with £516,355 in the previous reporting period. However, Brown has moved to reassure supporters, stating there are no concerns about the long-term health of the club.

Speaking to BBC Radio Glouces­ter­shire, Brown confirmed that discussions with prospective investors are currently underway but stressed that any future partnership must be in the best interests of Gloucester Rugby.

He said: "There is interest in Gloucester Rugby but our shareholders and board are very sensitive to who that investment might be.

"It has to be right for the club, for the future and we'll take every opportunity that comes but there are talks going on about further investment."

Interest in Premiership Rugby clubs has increased following the formal removal of promotion and relegation for the 2026-27 season. In recent months, Newcastle Falcons have been taken over by energy drinks giant Red Bull, Bath have secured backing from billionaire Sir James Dyson, while Exeter Chiefs have been acquired by Bournemouth football owners Black Knight.

Despite the increase in reported losses, Brown said supporters should not be alarmed by the latest financial figures.

He said: "I don't think there's any concern with Gloucester Rugby's health."

Brown highlighted a number of factors that had influenced the club's financial performance, including issues surrounding Rugby Football Union central funding and the renewal of the club's academy licence.

Looking ahead, the Gloucester chief executive remains optimistic about both the club's financial outlook and its prospects on the field.

He said: "There is prospects in the future for sure but we've just got to concentrate on what's in front of us which is a new group of players, a great new coaching team and I think we'll see a great performance on the field."

The club will be aiming for a significant improvement following a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, which saw Gloucester finish eighth in the Premiership after losing nine of their opening 10 league matches.

In response, Gloucester undertook a major restructuring of their coaching setup, appointing Chris Boyd and Rob Burgess, while George Skivington transitioned from director of rugby to head coach. The backroom team has also been strengthened with the arrivals of Joel Tomkins, Brett Deacon and Ryan Bower.

Further reinforcements have been added to the playing squad during the summer, with Wales internationals and captains Dewi Lake and Jac Morgan among the headline arrivals at Kingsholm.

Brown believes those changes have put Gloucester in a strong position ahead of the new season.

He said: "I feel like we've got a really complete team now and for the first time in a long time I feel like not just on-field, off-field as well we've got some really strong leaders.

"Across the board we're in a good spot."
