SPL set for 10 team league

The Scottish Premier League could be set for a 10 team top tier after member clubs met at Hampden Park to discuss restructuring Scotland's top flight.

Initially it was thought that an extension of the current 12 team league would be pushed forward, but SPL chairman Ralph Topping indicated that clubs felt a 16 or 18 team league would not be financially workable and instead two divisions of 10 teams has been proposed.

Speaking after the meeting Topping said: "If you look at Scottish football, a 16-team league wouldn't work economically and it would have a knock-on effect in terms of the quality of players you can attract.

"It's two 10s or the status quo in my view."

A vote on the plans is now excepted to take place at the next meeting on 17th January.
