WRU Confirms Plan to Sell Cardiff Rugby to Y11 Sport & Media
The Welsh Rugby Union has confirmed its intention to sell
Cardiff Rugby to Y11 Sport & Media after agreeing a conditional deal in
principle.
The WRU said it will now enter exclusive discussions with
Y11 to finalise the agreement, with all other interested parties excluded from
the process. The decision was taken unanimously by the WRU Board at a meeting
held on 19 January.
In a statement, the WRU said the proposed sale would mark a
significant milestone in Welsh rugby history and provide long-term stability
for the capital club under private ownership. The governing body added that the
move was designed to secure the strongest possible financial future for Cardiff
Rugby and enable specific, long-term investment.
The Board said its commitment to Cardiff Rugby, alongside
the club’s brand and history, was central to the decision-making process.
Subject to the completion of the purchase, Y11 Sport &
Media will become the new owners of Cardiff Rugby, with the club remaining
independent and continuing to play its home matches in the capital. Y11 will
also continue as owners of the Ospreys, with both clubs competing in the United
Rugby Championship and European competitions until at least the end of the
2026-27 season.
The WRU and Y11 will now enter a period of up to 60 days to
complete due diligence and agree the final terms of the deal. Once that process
is concluded, the purchase will be formally confirmed and full details shared
with all parties involved.
The WRU said it remains committed to supporting both Cardiff
and the Ospreys throughout the process and will continue to provide relevant
updates. It also confirmed it has contacted the other bidder to explain the
decision and thanked them for their interest and involvement.
