1895 Cup Final to go ahead

Saturday's 1895 Cup final between Featherstone and York City Knights will go ahead after Featherstone reported no further positive Covid-19 results.

The final was put in in doubt when a number of Featherstone players tested positive earlier in the week.

However, another round of PCR tests on Thursday, for players who were negative, all came back clear.

The game will be played before the Challenge Cup final between Castleford and St Helens.

Featherstone chief executive Martin Vickers told BBC Radio Leeds on Thursday he was optimistic the game would still go ahead.

"We think with the squad we have, we will be very competitive and we will be going there to win the game," he said.

The final, which is due to kick-off at 12:00 BST, will be streamed live on the BBC Sport website.

The inaugural 1895 Cup, contested by rugby league teams from the Championship and League 1 - the second and third tiers - was won by Sheffield Eagles in 2019.

Last season's competition was called off when those divisions had their seasons cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
