Leigh Leopards Threaten to Pull Out of Super League Semi-Final Over Ticket Row According to Wigan Warriors
Leigh Leopards have told Wigan Warriors they do not intend
to play Friday’s Super League semi-final because of a dispute over ticket
allocations, according to a statement from Wigan.
The Warriors said Leigh chairman Derek Beaumont wrote to
them late on Tuesday night claiming the allocation offered was “unacceptable.”
The two clubs are due to meet at 20:00 BST on Friday, with the winner advancing
to the Grand Final at Old Trafford.
Leigh, however, appeared to contradict Beaumont’s stance
with a post on X stating: “Two days to go until the semi-final.” The club has
yet to formally comment, while the Rugby Football League has also declined to
address the situation.
Wigan confirmed Leigh had been offered either 4,600
unreserved seats or 5,400 reserved seats in the North Stand — almost double the
minimum 10% allocation required for away supporters. The Warriors said the
figure had been determined by the independent Safety Advisory Group and the
club’s Ground Safety Officer, following police consultation.
“While we regret that Leigh Leopards found this arrangement
unacceptable, our club is legally, and professionally, bound to comply with the
directions of our Ground Safety Officer and the conditions of our Ground Safety
Certificate,” Wigan said in their statement. “The safety and welfare of all
supporters must come first. This is not open to negotiation.”
Wigan, who finished three points ahead of Leigh in the
regular season, said they continue to prepare for Friday’s semi-final as
planned. The winner will face either Hull KR or St Helens in the Grand Final on
11 October.
